The State of the World’s Children 2019

Every child has the right to a good life, and this is our mission here at Brighter Communities — to put children’s welfare and rights first through tech for good. Many non-profit organizations and businesses have dedicated their CSR and charity to children, but there is still a long way to go.

Around the world, millions of children are being denied a fair chance at a decent life, where 1 out of 5 children lives in extreme poverty with less than US$1.90 a day1. For us to continue doing this mission, we must be properly informed about the current situation. UNICEF talks about this in The State of the World’s Children 2019: Children, food and nutrition2 , which provides a comprehensive assessment on children, food, and nutrition in the 21st century. We will also look at the status of children’s education.

Families living in extreme poverty struggle to afford basic health care and nutrition, already giving children a rough start. At least 1 in 3 children under 5 years old is not growing well due to malnutrition (both undernutrition and obesity). In 2018, almost 540 million children suffered from undernutrition while the proportion of overweight children (5 to 19 years) rose from 1 in 10 to almost 1 in 5.

While we see great progress in many parts of the world, more than 175 million children are not enrolled in pre-primary education, which means they miss out on the foundations of learning from the start. UNESCO has also stated that roughly 258 million children, adolescents, and youth are out of school in 20183. Additionally, 6 out of 10 children leave primary school without achieving minimum proficiency levels in reading and mathematics4.

Our desire to see a world of empowered children who see themselves as the key to change still requires a ton of work, but it is definitely a worthy cause. Knowing these facts about the current state of children today only inspires us to work harder every day to take action that will create change for these children. We will tackle the problem together.
